DED awards $187,500 to help mental health nonprofit

YOP helps nonprofit organizations raise private-sector funds by providing partial state tax credits to businesses that make contributions to approved youth development projects.

“Organizations like Our Little Haven play a critical role in serving Missouri’s youth,” Department of Economic Development Director Rob Dixon said. “We appreciate their commitment to helping children and families build a strong foundation for growth and development.”

Officially opened in 1993 with a capacity of just 24 children, Our Little Haven provides a suite of programs designed to facilitate early intervention. The organization offers both physical and mental health treatment to children during their formative years (birth through age 10) as well as treatment services for the child’s family.

“Our Little Haven is grateful for our continued partnership with the Missouri Department of Economic Development and Youth Opportunity Tax Credit program,” said Our Little Haven Executive Director Scott Hummel, PhD, MSW. “These opportunities allow our supporters to directly impact the community in which they live and work. As an organization, Youth Opportunity Tax Credits are a valuable tool that has increased financial support to Our Little Haven and allows us to expand services and number of youth and families we are serving through Keystone Mental Health Services.”

The YOP funds will help support Our Little Haven’s Keystone Mental Health Program for at-risk children. The program provides mental health screenings, evaluations and therapy at no charge to low-income children suffering from emotional and behavioral problems.

In addition to Keystone Mental Health, the organization also provides services through its Taylor Family Care Center and Our Little Academy Day-Treatment Preschool.

Our Little Haven measured the impact of its services in 2017 as part of a 25-year anniversary celebration, finding it has impacted 18,849 children and families to date.
