MoonRidge Foods earns national award for community impact

May 15, 2017

Jefferson City, MO - Trade & Industry Development (link is external), the leading magazine dedicated to an audience of corporate site selectors in vertical industry segments, today announced the recipients of its 12th-Annual CiCi (Corporate Investment & Community Impact) Awards (see below). Among the winners was MoonRidge Foods of Pleasant Hope for its 2016 expansion which included the construction of a new $54 million flagship pork processing facility and the creation of more than 160 jobs.

"At its heart, Missouri is an agricultural state and MoonRidge Foods exemplifies the high quality food products made right here in the Show-Me State," said Acting Director of the Missouri Department of Economic Development Mike Downing. "I am pleased that MoonRidge Foods has been honored with the 2017 Corporate Investment & Community Impact Award. We knew that their expansion in Pleasant Hope would make a huge impact in this community and the surrounding rural area, as they continue to create new jobs."

The 30 corporate recipients of the 2017 CiCi Awards were selected based on their announcements during 2016 of their plans for economic development. These commitments to economic development will collectively create more than 42,000 jobs and result in total capital investment in excess of $35 billion. (These data are provided by respondents and public announcement and include estimations of future growth.)

“The 30 companies represented in the 2017 CiCi Awards have committed to economic development that not only will bring extraordinary capital investment to the communities in which they will locate, but will have an extraordinarily positive impact on those communities, most notably those included in the Community Impact category,” commented Scott D. Swoger, publisher of Trade & Industry Development and president of its parent company Due North Media. Due North Media provides media services to executives within specialized vertical markets impacting economic development.

Swoger continued, “Incredibly, the collective capital investments of the companies represented in the 2017 CiCi Awards exceeded the capital investments of the 30 companies in the 2016 CiCi Awards by approximately $22 billion. New direct jobs planned as a result of these investments also far exceed those of 2016 — by approximately 14,000.”

The CiCi Awards are unique in that, in addition to commemorating the largest capital investments for development or expansion announced within a designated year, they equally recognize projects for the positive, often transformational, impact they will have on a community, regardless of the amount of money invested by the corporation.

Among the criteria considered for CiCi Awards recognition in the Community Impact category are the number of jobs created and/or retained, unemployment figures in the area, average income level of the region, area plant closings or decline in industry segments and the creation of new industry segments with employment opportunities, among others.

To arrive at the selection of the 12th-Annual CiCi Awards recipients, Trade & Industry Development editors considered several hundred announcements of corporate economic development made during 2016.
